Artist Statement
:
Self portrait photography and body ornamentation are the tools I use to reveal and map my identity.
Using my skin as a canvas, I draw lines, dots and circles in patterns that grow and spontaneously evolve in response to the shape of my body. As each unique pattern unfolds, I stare into the mirror and watch my appearance change. The image reflected back at me challenges my well entrenched self image and I feel as if I am being pushed outside the boundaries of my identity. I document the ephemeral drawing, as well as my internal transformation with photographs.
I strive to stretch the borders of my identity and construct a self image that plumbs the depths of my longing rather than conform to society’s ideals of feminine beauty and behavior.
